The turkey leftovers are long gone, the neighbors have hung their Christmas lights and local businesses, restaurants and retailers have decorated their establishments to entice Holiday shoppers and patrons. While you may have boycotted black Friday and cyber Monday in an effort to avoid the public, regroup from Thanksgiving and digest everything you consumed over the weekend, you may not have noticed that Wilmington is beginning to embrace the Holiday spirit and it's time to get on board!
There are always plenty of Holiday parties to attend and several drive-by worthy neighborhoods that go all out with their Christmas light displays, but we think one of the best ways to get into the Holiday spirit is through the arts. Wilmington is spreading a lot of Christmas Cheer in the form of plays and musicals in the next few weeks that are sure to leave you humming along to the tunes of the Holidays, so we want to share those features with you!
Grab your friends and family, put on your most festive Holiday attire and use these events as an excuse to get out of the house, support our local thespians/venues and embrace some of the joy that we know these productions will offer for the Season!
First up on the list (which isn't Christmas specific, but definitely a classic) is "The Sound of Music!" The Broadway tour of this well-known musical will be in Wilmington December 5th and 6th for a two-night stand and promises to be a family friendly production that you won't want to miss. Click HERE for ticket information and pricing!
Next up (and perhaps an all time favorite) Thalian Hall presents "A Christmas Story: The Musical" and lucky for us, it's happening right before the Live Broadcast premiers on the Fox TV Network December 17th! While we all enjoy live television broadcasts of musicals, seeing this production live and locally on stage is an experience for your family that cannot be duplicated through a television premiere! This production will take place on December 8th, 9th and 10th as well as December 15th, 16th and 17th and you can find more details HERE!
If you're into Christmas and Ballet, then you'll want to see how the City Ballet of Wilmington brings "A Carolina Nutcracker" to the Wilson Center at CFCC on December 2nd and 3rd! Featuring professional dancers from the Carolina Ballet Company in Raleigh, this show is a brilliant combination of sophisticated dancing, a live 50 piece Orchestra and true Christmas Joy! For pricing and more info Click HERE!
Perhaps you're looking for a smaller production and an unfamiliar story line... if this is the case you may want to clear your calendars on December 10th and 11th to enjoy "The Memory Book" which is put on by Theatre for All (a company for people with disabilities) that explores an occurrence between a grandparent and grandchild as photos from a family album they are viewing begin to come to life! This production takes place at Theatre NOW for free and donations are graciously accepted! To see more on location and donations, Click HERE!
If you're looking to survive the Holidays through comedy, or you're just not quite ready to be jolly, so you're looking for a good laugh to force you into accepting that Christmas is quickly approaching, you definitely won't want to miss "Every Christmas Story Ever Told", as presented by Big Dawg Productions. This comedic holiday performance features actors quickly going through multiple traditions, stories and songs about the Holidays and has multiple showing dates and times, which can be found HERE!
Maybe you have younger children who you'd like to expose to a child-friendly theater performance, but aren't sure how long they'll sit, which shows are kid-friendly, etc. and we've got good news for you! The New York touring company, Ballet for Young Audiences, is returning to the Wilmington area to perform abbreviated shows of "Sleeping Beauty" and "The Nutcracker", which are geared toward younger children, especially those who have never been to a ballet or theater production before! These popular and attention-grabbing shows are a great introduction for children and let's be honest, parents will enjoy these classics too! You can see more about these kid-friendly productions, HERE!
Opposite the previous production, if it's a humorous, more adult appropriate approach to the Holidays you're searching for and you aren't looking for a politically correct experience, then you certainly need to visit Level 5, North Front Theatre for Panache Production's "The Santa Land Diaries!" Written by David Sedaris and adapted by Joe Mantello, this show follows a disgruntled Elf on his misadventures while working at a Macy's holiday attraction! Find out more about Crumpet the elf and this "adult audience recommended" show, HERE!
While the above mentioned performances are great ways to ease yourself into the Holiday Season, it's definitely worth mentioning the 7th Annual Holiday Screening of "It's A Wonderful Life" at Thalian Hall this month! Shown as it was meant to be (on the big screen) Frank Capra's iconic holiday film screening has become a Wilmington Holiday tradition and a great way to share some Christmas spirit with your family. This screening takes place Thursday, December 21st at 7pm and tickets are $10.00.
Regardless of how you and your family prepare for the Holiday, we hope you enjoy yourselves and we encourage you to check back throughout the month for more Holiday cheer around Wilmington! There's never a lack of Christmas spirit here locally and we are excited to be part of such a festive and inspiring community!
