Airlie's holiday light display, Enchanted Airlie, runs until just before Christmas. Returning this year, "LEGOS", those colorful bricks we all love to build with. Last year's display was made up of over 150,000 bricks and set a record as the largest crowd to see a single Lego display in the US! A Wilmington tradition started in 2005; Enchanted Airlie is a wonderful opportunity to bring the whole family together to share in the joy of the season. Stroll through the gardens at your own pace, enjoying the beautiful holiday flowers, festive lights, live musical entertainment, and a display of a large garden model train running for your enjoyment!

Visit the Gardens for Enchanted Airlie starting Friday, November 25th, and running on 11/26, 12/1, 12/2, 12/3, 12/8, 12/9, 12/10, 12/15, 12/16, 12/17, 12/19, 12/20 & December 21st.

There are two viewing per evening, 5-7pm and 7-9pm. Tickets must be

Iron Man 3 Shooting in Wilmington!

The third installment of Marvel Studios' Iron Man franchise is setting up shop in North Carolina. EUE/Screen Gems and North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue announced in a press conference Thursday that the studios' Wilmington outpost will host the bulk of the film's production.

Marvel filmed both Iron Man and Iron Man 2 both at its own Manhattan Beach studios in California, where it reportedly considered producing the threequel, along with locations in Michigan and New Mexico.

"We aggressively pursued this piece of business,” said EUE/Screen Gems co-owner and COO Chris Cooney. “This film is a game changer—not only for our studios, but for the entire state of North Carolina. It feels great to bring this project to Wilmington, a place where we’ve invested emotionally and financially since 1996. Today, our vision becomes reality.”

Cooney cited North Carolina's 25-percent film incentive and the studio's 150,000-square-foot facility as factors in Marvel's decision.

Iron Man 3 marks the largest production to come to Wilmington, which has previously hosted films such as I Know What You Did Last Summer and 28 Days and the television series Dawson's Creek.

Starring Robert Downey Jr., the original Iron Man took in $585 million worldwide 2008. Its 2010 sequel had an international take of $624 million. Iron Man 3 is set to move into its Wilmington offices in early 2012, with a scheduled release date of May 3, 2013.

We say: Groove on the arty scene and enjoy homey breakfast any time of day at Nick's Diner.

There's a counter, yes, but it's in the shape of a big, red, electric guitar.

Stuff's crowded on the top of a refrigerator, but the mix includes a Godzilla doll and a big bobble-head James Brown instead of napkin holders, stacks of menus or mini boxes of cereal.

A green, neon dragon flares among vintage Coca-Cola signs on the back wall. One of rocker Kurt Cobain's sweaters is framed alongside giant paintings of Batman and Vamperilla.

A mirror ball hangs between two psychedelic, blown glass chandeliers that would be equally at home in an Amsterdam coffee shop.

Wiry owner Harry Pallas paces in and out, his thin grin and pointy sideburns bringing Batman nemesis The Joker to mind.

All in all, odd décor for a diner, but Nick's food leaves little doubt about its heritage. Pallas is a third-generation owner. His grandfather opened the original Nick's in the late 1940s in Ohio.

Breakfast dictates the menu, whether it's the Smack Your Mama Skillet – steak slices; crisp-tender, shredded hash browns; sautéed onions, mushrooms and green peppers; and melted provolone cheese on two over-easy eggs served in a small cast-iron skillet – or the heart-stopping Ohio City Burger with its two breakfast sausage patties, crisp-chewy bacon, smoked ham and an over-medium egg.

An obese vegetable egg-white omelet is the rare manager of healthy heart rhythms.

Nick's serves breakfast for dinner, lunch for breakfast, just about whatever diners desire.

A crunchy crust melds the Philly cheesesteak's protein load in the morning as well as in the afternoon. Boldly Cajun-spiced, medium-sized shrimp land with sautéed onions, green peppers and scrambled eggs on grits suited to day or night.

Disappointing housemade corned beef hash is more hash browns than beef and unusually sweet one afternoon. Dry prime rib shavings – instead of the juicy slices the menu describes – arrive atop the bright spring mix, blue cheese crumbles, and pucker-tart, vinaigrette-dressed portobello mushrooms in the Black and Blue Salad.

Lucky diners will be at Nick's when silky, sharp key lime pie is offered. Otherwise, they'll linger over coffee, or maybe some Riondo prosecco. As the octogenarian says over his last bite of grits, “There's plenty of stuff in here – some of it strange.”
